What is the Maryland Juniors club philosophy?
Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club (MDJRS) is first and foremost an educational organization committed to developing responsible members of society. While our goal is to develop teams that compete successfully at the Chesapeake Region and national levels, the most important lessons learned through volleyball extend far beyond the court: character, discipline, teamwork, accountability and perseverance are at the foundation of everything we teach.
At Maryland Juniors we believe volleyball should be both fun and educational, team goals come before individual interests, hard work and commitment create meaningful improvement, true sportsmanship should be shown at all times, and athletics should complement academic success.
Does Maryland Juniors have interests beyond volleyball?
Yes. Our philosophy is student first, athlete second. Many of our coaches have played or coached at the collegiate level and understand the challenge of balancing academics, athletics and family responsibilities. Student-athletes learn time management, prioritization, responsibility and commitment, and we expect players to honor their commitment to their team and communicate responsibly when conflicts arise.
Who are the coaches at Maryland Juniors?
Our coaching staff includes international professional-level coaches, NCAA collegiate coaches, former Division I athletes, and high school varsity and state championship coaches. They have developed athletes who have gone on to national teams, NCAA Division I, II and III programs, and championship high school teams.
What is the team structure and playing time philosophy?
Elite teams are the highest level of competition in the club. They travel to major tournaments, compete in AAU/USAV Junior National Qualifiers and multi-day championship events. Playing time is earned through performance, commitment and preparation; club dues do not guarantee playing time.
Open teams compete throughout the region, attend selected travel tournaments and end-of-season championships. Playing time is earned while keeping an emphasis on team development and participation.
Regional teams focus on skill development, teamwork, confidence and enjoyment of the sport. All tournaments are within the Chesapeake Region and playing time is designed to give every player meaningful opportunities to learn and compete.
How long is the club season and how often do teams practice?
The club season generally runs from December through May (Memorial Day weekend). Elite teams in the 13U-17U age groups typically extend their season through June until AAU/USAV Nationals.
Elite and Open teams practice three times per week, and Regional teams twice per week, with each practice running approximately two hours.
What tournaments do Maryland Juniors teams attend?
Elite and Open teams (12U-18U) take part in regional and national competitions. Schedules vary each season but may include the Monument City Classic, MDJRS MLK Challenge, Capitol Hill Classic, Northeast Qualifier (NEQ), Big South Qualifier, East Coast Championship, AAU National Championships and the USAV Junior National Championships for qualified teams. Regional teams compete primarily in local tournaments and a season-ending championship event.
Where do teams practice?
All Maryland Juniors teams practice at the Maryland Juniors Sports Center, 8221 Preston Court, Jessup, MD 20794, the home and training center of the club.
Can players participate in other school sports?
Yes. Maryland Juniors supports multi-sport athletes. Players must still understand their commitment to their Maryland Juniors team, since missed practices can affect development, team preparation and playing time. Many of our athletes have balanced club volleyball with other sports through strong communication, planning and commitment.
How can I join Maryland Juniors?
Maryland Juniors welcomes players regardless of race, religion or national origin. All players must take part in the club tryout process to be considered for a team. Tryout information is posted on the Tryouts pages of this site.
What are the club fee, travel expense and uniform policies?
Club fees cover coaching compensation, facility rental, equipment, tournament entry fees, and club operations. Travel expenses and uniform costs are calculated separately. Club fees must be paid according to the schedule in the player agreement; alternative arrangements may be considered with approval from the club director.
Travel fees for overnight and multi-day tournaments may include airfare, hotels, transportation, rental vehicles, gas, parking and coach travel expenses, divided among team members. Players who do not attend a required travel tournament remain responsible for their share of coaching travel expenses. Uniform fees follow the season payment schedule.
Refunds are only considered for injuries sustained during a USAV-sanctioned practice or tournament, must be requested in writing with physician documentation, and are prorated based on the remaining season. Fundraising contributions and uniform fees are non-refundable.
