Xiangrong Liu (Sean Liu)

Club Director
Xiangrong (Sean) Liu is the Founder and Club Director of Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club. Since founding the club in 2004, Sean has built Maryland Juniors into one of the premier volleyball clubs in the region.

Sean brings more than 50 years of playing and coaching experience spanning the junior, club, high school, and NCAA Division I levels. He began his volleyball career as a professional player with the Shenyang Military Men’s Volleyball Team in China, where he competed for six years before becoming the head coach of the women’s volleyball team within the same military program.

Sean came to the United States as an exchange teacher at Bay Village High School in Cleveland, Ohio. After earning his Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Dayton in 1995, he joined the Flyers’ coaching staff and served as an assistant coach for seven seasons. During his tenure, Dayton compiled a 133–83 (.616) record and captured the 1998 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

In 2000, Sean joined the coaching staff at the University of Maryland, where he spent eight seasons (2000–2007). He was responsible for all aspects of player development, on-court training, recruiting, and scouting. His recruiting efforts and player development philosophy helped transform the program into one of the ACC’s top teams. In just his second season, the Terrapins opened the year with an 11–0 record, the longest season-opening winning streak in program history at the time. During his tenure, Maryland won three ACC Championships, earned three NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances, and recorded more than 130 victories.

While coaching at the University of Maryland, Sean founded Maryland Juniors Volleyball Club in 2004 with just three teams. Under his leadership, the club has grown into one of the largest and most successful elite volleyball programs in Maryland, expanding to 39 teams during the 2025–2026 season, including 7 boys teams and 32 girls teams. Since its founding, Maryland Juniors has developed countless athletes who have competed at USAV Junior Nationals, with many alumni continuing their volleyball careers at NCAA Division I, II, and III programs across the country.

In 2010, Sean further expanded the club by establishing the Maryland Juniors Sports Center, providing Maryland Juniors with its own dedicated training facility and creating one of the premier volleyball development environments in the region.

Sean is also the organizer of several Maryland Juniors international summer tours and training camps in China. Through his extensive international connections, he has organized and hosted elite-level competitions featuring the PAC-12 All-Star Team, Stanford University Volleyball Team, USA Volleyball All-Star and National Select Teams, and professional teams from China, providing unique competitive and cultural experiences for athletes.
